Speak it Loud: Diversity, Migration, Culture

Senza categoria

Perspectives from the Italian team

Introduction

The project “Speak It Loud: Diversity, Migration, Culture” provided a unique opportunity to delve into the intricate process of migration, and address challenges related to fear, racism, and stereotypes. Through active intercultural dialogue, and the exchange of point of views among participants from diverse backgrounds, we were able to explore the roots of stereotypes and understand the impact of our mindsets on the perception of other nations. The active involvement of youth played a pivotal role in shaping the project, allowing us to respond to specific needs and achieve tangible results in terms of awareness and social change.

The project: aim, activities and reflection

In particular, the project aimed to foster a deep understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity among its participants, enhancing intercultural learning and encouraging meaningful dialogue. It seeked to empower individuals with a sense of social responsibility, highlighting the impact they can have on challenging and changing stereotypes about other nations.
A key component was to educate participants about the complexity of migration, distinguishing between different categories such as labor migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people. Additionally, the project intended to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively share what they have learnt within their own communities through the organisation of workshops. At its core, the initiative strived to cultivate strong, collaborative relationships between participants from different countries, emphasising the importance of tolerance and understanding towards all nations and the diverse reasons behind migration.

In order to achieve those objectives, fifty young people from five different countries (Armenia, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Ukraine) were invited to join the exchange, during which we carried out different types of activities, involving simulation games, theatre performances and workshops. The main goal was to shed light on the widespread problem of discrimination and show its real-life impact in our respective countries. At the same time, the activities aimed to solve, or at least mitigate, the challenges daily faced by immigrants, and in particular those connected with prejudice and stereotypes.

Thus, thanks to active and creative non-formal education, every participant managed to show, share and discuss their cultural perceptions on the wider phenomena of migration. As participants, we therefore had the chance to learn and investigate the cultural peculiarities of the other participants, but also of our own, constantly seeking to eradicate unjust attitudes and labels, and at the same time provide participants with an understanding of the importance and power of intercultural dialogue.

The warmth of Armenia: exploring and getting to know each other

During the project we stayed in the city of Gyumri, in the north-east of the country, not far from the border with Georgia. Gyumri is known for its cultural and artistic heritage, and it managed to give us a warm welcome and experience despite the sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall. On our free days we visited the Marmashen monastery, located not far from the city. The beauty of the monastery left us speechless, but what impressed us the most was the natural landscape that surrounds it. Finally, in order to fully experience Armenia, we organised a trip to visit the capital Yerevan and the nearby monastery of Gherard, Garni temple and the geological site of the Symphony of Stones: all places steeped in culture that will always be in our hearts.

Overall, joining this intercultural exchange meant diving into an environment rich with diversity, where every dialogue and activity became an opportunity to challenge our own beliefs and broaden our horizons.
The relationships with the other young participants, coming from different countries and backgrounds, enriched our personal journey, allowing us to discover new perspectives on migration, culture, and the importance of intercultural dialogue.

Every conversation, simulation game, theatre performance, and workshop were not just educational activities but moments of deep human sharing, where laughter, emotions, and sometimes tears intertwined, creating unbreakable bonds.
This experience highlighted how understanding and accepting diversity can truly generate positive change in society, combating stereotypes and discrimination. It showed how behind statistics and political beliefs stand people with their personal stories, seeking dignity, safety, and a better life.
We came back home not only with unforgettable memories but also with the awareness that cultural barriers can be broken down through mutual respect and listening.

Conclusion

As we conclude this journey of intercultural exchange, we reflect on the profound impact it had on each of us. From challenging our beliefs to forging unbreakable bonds, this experience has been transformative. We depart with a deeper understanding of the power of diversity and the importance of fostering mutual respect. Let us carry these lessons forward as we strive to create a more inclusive and empathetic society.

From The Ground Up: un’Opportunità Magica!

Senza categoria

🌍Dove? Lleida, Spagna

📆Quando? 22 – 31 maggio 2024

👥Chi? Youthworker dai 18 anni in su

Social Justice Club: Our Lithuanian Journey

Senza categoria

Our friends are always asking about our Erasmus+ projects. For those who don’t know, a Youth Exchange is an educational experience that involves young people from different European countries, offering them the opportunity to share cultures, ideas and skills through activities and collaborative experiences.

What about us? Five countries took part in a project in Druskininkai, Lithuania, concerning the theme of social justice, among which Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Greece and the host country itself. This exchange allowed us to improve, in addition to our language skills, our ability to put ourselves at stake as individuals and as a group, our knowledge on the activities’ topics and more generally our ability to exercise our rights and duties as active citizens in our society.

Thanks to our lovely facilitators Carlos and Jurgita, we had the opportunity to get to talk more about those topics that aren’t discussed enough but that at the same time are fundamental for a civil and peaceful coexistence.

More specifically, we brainstormed ideas of social justice, managing to come up with a definition that allowed us to move forward with the activities.

We then came to concretize these topics with practical activities and games. Among all the issues that have been dealt with, such as legitimacy, power and privilege, conflicting identities and empowerment, the most debated was social rights over which we detabed, sometimes getting too excited to the point it became an active debate but always showing interest and respect.

These comparisons helped us open our minds, trying to change our point of view in case of error. In the middle of this unforgettable experience we had the opportunity to visit Druskininkai, a small but cozy village near our accommodation.

The atmosphere was dreamy, with snow covering everything and the lake where we spent some of our time together (a greeting to Drunka). It was a very interesting trip since we learned something about the town, and we tasted the spa water (our faces that were a little disgusted but also funny).

Let’s not leave out our unforgettable nights spent together dancing, singing and playing, but above all learning a little more about the beautiful countries that took part in this project, the commitment they put into showing everyone the passion and love for their home and the fact that they urged us to visit them.

We just have to thank everyone and recommend these experiences to our friends because the Erasmus experience is a unique journey that enriches your life in unimaginable ways. Living in a foreign country, immersing yourself in a new culture and making international friends creates a stimulating and transformative environment. Erasmus projects are not only exchange programmes, they are indelible chapters of personal discovery and collection.

Oltre l’Obiettivo: i risultati del progetto Take a Green Shoot e le testimonianze del nostro team

Senza categoria

English version

Beyond the Lens: Results of the Take a Green Shoot Project and Testimonials from Our Team

October marked the beginning of a truly unique adventure: the youth exchange program “Take a Green Shoot” in Armenia, dedicated to the worlds of photography and eco-sustainability. Throughout this project, our Italian team had the opportunity not only to refine photography techniques but also to explore the culture and history of a country rich in traditions. Through engaging workshops and peer-to-peer activities, participants discovered the power of images in conveying stories and emotions.

Capturing the Soul of Haghartsin, Yerevan, and Lake Sevan

The trips to various symbolic places in Armenia were unforgettable. The Haghartsin Monastery and Lake Sevan, wrapped in a mystical atmosphere, offered breathtaking scenery, and the streets of Yerevan, with their vibrancy and colors, proved an endless source of inspiration for our photographs. A must-visit was the TUMO Center, a hub for creativity and technology that has been bringing together hundreds of young minds through courses and lessons.

But it wasn’t all about photography! During one of our outings, we put our cooking aprons on to cook the traditional Armenian dessert, “gata,” with some precious local ladies. The cooking session concluded with a tasting of typical wine, in a region where wine production has deep-rooted traditions.

Now, let’s give the floor to the participants, sharing their voices from a journey that goes beyond the simple click of a camera!

Francesco: I’ve already participated in many projects this year, but it’s always amazing to discover new cultures and get to know people on a deeper level than you do in everyday life. This project made me realize something about my future life: I’ll become a facilitator for these kinds of projects.

Alice: Before coming to Armenia, I had no expectations about the country and the culture, but I was very surprised. From the beginning, everything was amazing, and I fell in love with Armenia, thanks also to the trip organized for us by the facilitators; the mountains, the churches, the gata, everything was incredible. Armenia was an unexpected discovery, and I will definitely come back.

Sveva: The project’s themes are very relevant, and I found the idea of presenting the environmental crisis through the use of photography and videomaking very interesting and innovative, within the context of Erasmus projects.

Stefano: Often, closing oneself off in daily life makes you forget how varied and wonderful people can be, so it’s necessary to go to the farthest corners of the continent to rediscover the heart of Europe.

Sofia: I am immensely grateful to Youmore for the opportunity to take part in an experience so rich in encounters, stories, sharing, discoveries, landscapes that seem crystallized in time, and unique connections. Armenia will always be in my heart!

Riccardo: For me, it was a remarkable experience, I met fantastic people, and the openmindedness I found gives hope for a great future.

Eneda: Tsaghkadzor, despite leaving without enough time to form expectations, turned out to be a genuine natural treasure, and so were the people I met. The autumn colors accompanied us throughout all the visits to ancient monasteries and breathtaking excursions. Even in the capital city, the coexistence of the most innovative buildings – such as the TUMO Center for Creative Technologies – and memories of historical events – such as the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex – contributed to the emotions of this experience. I really wish that anyone reading these words could experience all the sensations of this project, through the photos and videos; each of the participants tried to capture it in their own digital and psychological memory. Yet, this is to say everything and nothing; we are continuously bombarded by images and visual tools… what we learned is precisely this: what sense does a photograph make? Why make it green? Photographs are silent, yet they have something to say: during this project, around fifty people from Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Georgia, Germany, Armenia learned and taught the importance of “Take a green shoot” and what it means to take a photograph that captures the most fragile and powerful aspects that Nature and the environment want to communicate to us.
